America Television (Spanish: América Televisión), better known as America TV, is a Peruvian television network affiliated with Televisa of Mexico. It was founded on December 15, 1958 by Antonio Umbert F., Nicanor Gonzalez V., and Avelino Aramburu. The network belongs to the Plural TV group formed by the daily newspapers El Comercio (Peru) and La República. America TV is the second oldest television station in Peru, the first with regular commercial broadcasts, and currently the most watched television station in Peru.
América TV is currently one of the most watched television channels in Peru. Since 1958, with more than 50 years without interruption, was competition for Panamericana Televisión (then the most watched television station), Andina Radiodifusión y Televisión (ATV) and Frecuencia Latina. America TV transmitted (and continues in some cases) programs such as El Chavo del Ocho, El Chapulín Colorado, among others; the games of the Peruvian national soccer team, and news coverage of municiple and presidential elections, movies, and national and international telenovelas.
Televisa of Mexico bought America TV in 1982 and eventually led all operations on the station for almost a decade until the 1990s, with Crousillat Group led by José Enrique Crousillat and José Francisco Cruosillat who became the CEO's of the station throughout 1990s, until the end of Fujimori's term, when the station was again purchased by El Comercio Group and La República Group.
The station is currently the most watched television channel in Peru. America has produced popular soap operas such as Luz Maria, Pobre Diabla, Isabella: Mujer Enamorada, and a reality show, El Desafío del Inca, that gave an award of a million soles.
Eric Jurgensen has been the CEO and Director of Programming at America TV since 2003. The station is home of broadcasting in Peru for the Olympics.
